I haven't done last minute artwork in a very long time. I remember now why I don't. It is far too stressful to put the kind of effort that I want into the piece and make sure that it is my best work. But I took on a last minute commission for an AoA that was due for coronation that might otherwise mean that the person would not get a scroll. That pulls at the heart strings (yes, I do have a heart, shhhhh) so I said sure I would do it.
The results are below. I used Alys Mackintosh's Mad Libs for Scribes for the wording, because I just did not have the time, and then off to the races. There are no process pictures because......time. :-) I like it because it is delicate and to the point.
For the calligraphy I used my trusty Rotring pen. For the illumination, I used my usual crow quill pen and Higgins eternal for the ink, Windsor Newton ultramarine for the blue, Mosaic gold for the golds, Windsor Newton Permanent White, and some nice vermillion period pigment that I already had made up.
Reference information:
The reference was an oldie but a goodie in that I have used this reference before, but put a little more of my own spin on it. "Time Sanctified: The Book of Hours in Medieval Art and Life, Wieck, George Brazillier, Inc., New York, in Association with the Walters Museum, Baltimore, page 143.
What I would do differently - I would have arranged to have more time so that I could have enjoyed the experience and possibly make more depth to the art. I am pleased that my calligraphy is nice and even.
